To bring everyone up to speed…

We began our public presentation series in April with a general introduction to Cascadia Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), green building costs and benefits, and an introduction to our upcoming Case Study (Selkirk Dormitories). Next, we held a Design Charrette to capture some public input on these buildings.

On October 8th we held our first LEED Case Study presentation to discuss how the Sustainable Sites section of LEED criteria could hypothetically be applied to a renovation of the Dormitory building and site. The presentation was very well received so we adopted the presentation format for the LEED sections of Water Efficiency and Energy & Atmosphere, delivered on December 2nd.

In order to keep things riveting (OK, interesting) we continued to speak in layman’s terms, using lots of pictures and illustrations to help everyone grasp the intent and application of each point. Our format of multiple speakers was also well received.

The presentation was  limited to 1.5h, in which time we touched on the 22 attainable points in the Water Efficiency and Energy & Atmosphere sections of LEED.  Our goals were to ‘translate’ technical terms and avoid the use of text heavy slides. We tailored slides to help people visualize the purpose and application of the points through photos and illustrations.

Each presenter looked at the following with regard to the credit(s) they covered.

1) The General Intent and Requirements – how it can be accomplished and what the significance is, in terms of sustainability.
